Chinese Black Sesame Dessert Soup 黑芝麻糊
At long last the chill winds of autumn are blowing through Hong Kong, blasting away the warm long lasting humidity of the sometimes seemingly unending Hong Kong summer. In other words, it's finally getting cold!
I'm sitting at my writing desk, snuggled contentedly into my soft and very warm and comfy Chinese silk padded jacket 棉襖. Guarded against the autumn chills, my thoughts turn to warming myself and my family from the inside out. Hum... Ah ha, I've got it! What better way to do that then to whip up some deliciously soul soothing and warming Chinese dessert soups? Not only tasty but, according to Chinese beliefs, these soups are essential to supporting health and warming the body throughout the cool months.
And to start with is my personal favorite, the rock star of Chinese dessert soups, the black and gorgeous Chinese Black Sesame Dessert Soup 黑芝麻糊, a thick and sweetly nutty soup packed with intense aroma of freshly roasted and ground black sesame seed. Warms the heart and sweetens the day, all in one yummilicious bowl!

Black Sesame Walnut Mooncakes 黑芝麻核桃月餅
Yay, it's almost time for Mid Autumn Festival 中秋節...my favorite Chinese festival! I love the fact that it's a night festival (I'm an owl for sure) and the extravagance of Chinese lanterns floating like glowing gems thru the velvet night, illuminating the happy faces of children up well past their bedtime. And...glory!...the sight of the Moon Goddess Chang'e 嫦娥 floating high in the sky in all her silvery glory is not to be missed.
And besides all that I love making and baking and eating mooncakes, those wonderful moon shaped cakes stuffed with all manner of decadently delicious fillings. (See the list of our other yummilicious mooncake recipes at the end of this post!) And out of all those decadent mooncakes I think these particular mooncakes might be my favs.
Maybe cuz I dig the fragrant nuttiness of roasted black sesame. Maybe cuz I lust after walnuts. I don't know...maybe I'm just nutty.
I just know that I love eating these deliciously satisfying Black Sesame Walnut Mooncakes 黑芝麻核桃月餅, with its tender golden crust wrapped around an oh so fragrant sesame filling dotted through with delicious bitter sweet bits of walnut. I can eat a whole plate of these in one go! That's right...the whole plate means all five of the mooncakes on the plate you're looking at...gulp, gulp...gone already! Hee hee...

Black Sesame Tang Yuan 黑芝麻湯圓
Tong Yuans are sexy. If you've ever had a Tong Yuan you'll have to agree with me. These Chinese sweet rice dumplings are smooth lusciously unctuous round balls of delightfully ricey gooeyness hiding a center of sublime sweetly fragrant filling just waiting to ooze out into your waiting mouth.
Now that I've totally grossed you out (and captured your attention!) let me state that I stand by all that I have just written. For it is all true, Tong Yuans, or 湯圓, are one of very few truly sexy chinese foods. The excitement of the mysterious center filling, the senses awakened by the richness of the filling contrasting the simplicity of the rice dough, the delightfully perfect round fullness, the absolute pleasure of the act of eating a tender, tasty, sexy Tong Yuan...

Black Sesame Ice Cream 黑芝麻雪糕
The summer's coming and it's time for lots of ice cream! We tried a recipe for black sesame ice cream that is just out of this world delicious! It seems even to have supplanted our blueberry ice cream as the family's favorite ice cream flavor.
I think the reason it is so good is that you make the black sesame paste yourself. We tried this before, roasting and then grinding our own black sesame for Black Sesame Tang Yuan 黑芝麻湯圓 that came out fantastic. The black sesame is so fragrant this way! Nothing that you buy or that you get when eating out can compare to it. Well, here is something just as yummy with this freshly made paste - the fabulous Black Sesame Ice cream!
