I can still remember very clearly the first time I had one of these little milk candies. I was still a wee lass, we were in LA Chinatown, buying a bit of chinese groceries, which in those long ago days (eons really!) were hard to come by even in LaLa Land. My dear 爸爸 spotted them and immediately bought a bag of White Rabbit Creamy Candy as a treat for us girls. (He was really thrilled to find these!)
Curious and excited, I carefully untwisted the beautifully colorful waxy wrapping paper with the cute bunny on it.
Inside was a creamy white candy in another layer of thin paper. I tried to take that off too, only to have the delicate paper tear. At this point I teared up a bit, frustrated that I couldn't access that delicious looking candy, only to look up and find my 爸爸 laughing at me.
He explained to me the secret of the White Rabbit Creamy Candy, which is the really cool and edible! rice paper that is wrapped in a crisp layer around the chewy creamy candy. This, I believe, is the key to White Rabbit Candy's continued success down the years (it's been around since the 1950's Shanghai!), this delicate wispy melt on your tongue deliciously starchy rice paper.
Eating a White Rabbit Creamy Candy is a special experience because you just have to have your own technique. Kinda of like for Oreos. I like to tongue it first, letting the rice paper melt just so on my tongue. Only when all the sticking out rice paper is melted away do I slip the whole hard roll of candy into my mouth and start to chew.
Slowly at first cuz it's hard kinda like a tootsie roll, just kinda sticking my teeth in it, until the hard bar warms up and finally is a soft and tender wad of soft gooey goodness in the mouth. Ah! Creamy, soft, milky sweet deliciousness! Sooooo good!!
There's nothing in the world like White Rabbit Creamy Candy! Well then...what are you waiting for?! Go on, get out to the shops and get yourself some already! And let us know how you like to eat 'em!
Psst...if you're having a hard time finding these delicious candies in the stores, you can get the White Rabbit Creamy Candy here.

White Rabbit candy is the best out there, followed by sesame candy. Its surprising to see after all these years, these candies are still around.
ReplyDeleteWhich sesame candy, specifically? Would love to know ~ ellen
DeleteSorry Ellen, I don't remember the brand name. All I can recall is that is a thin one inch rectangular toasted sesame candy, a bit crunchy like a peanut brittle.
DeleteI think I know which one you're talking about! Yum, gotta go and get me a bagful! ~ellen
DeleteWhie I think the White Rabbit candy is good, I think my overall favorite childhood candy is the Japanese Botan Rice candy. The candy is enrobed in an edible rice paper also. Not only do you get a sweet treat but it comes with some sticker inside the box.
ReplyDeleteOoh! A 'come with a toy' candy! I've never seen these before. Does anyone know where to find in HK? ~ellen
DeleteI am sure you will find them somewhere in HK. I remember my parents used to buy these for us when we were kids. Incidentally, Amazon.com have them for sale. I'm certain once you see the packaging you might recognize the candy.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck in your search!
White Rabbit candies and Haw Flakes were our childhood staples!
